Dee was born Dec. 9, 1918, in Blakesburg, Iowa, the daughter of George and Cecil (Selman) Huber. Growing up in Blakesburg, Dee was the starting guard on her high school basketball team at five foot nothin'. After graduation, she attended the University of Iowa. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega.
Dee worked as a lab technician at the Iowa City VA Health Care System for many years, retiring in 1980. She married J. Dick Snakenberg on June 3, 1939, in Hannibal, Mo. Dick died in 1954.
She later met and married Dr. Charles B. Thayer on Feb. 25, 1967, at First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. Following Charles' retirement in 1979, he went to work for the Department of Defense as director of the Mindi Clinic in the Republic of Panama. The couple spent six years there, two of which Dee served as mayor of the village of Coco Solo. The Army also put her in charge of "Welcoming Newcomers" to the Canal Zone.
Dee was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, active with the Alpha Chi Omega Alumni Association, Daughters of the American Revolution, PEO, International Wives Club and Community Theatre, where she had several parts.
She was incredibly vivacious, sharp-minded and exceptionally well organized and she used these skills in everything she did.
Her presence will be missed by many, especially her children, who voted her the best Mom ever.
Survivors include her children, John (Elizabeth) Snakenberg of Fort Worth, Texas, and Penne Evins of Iowa City; stepchildren, Steve Thayer of Iowa City, Cindy (Stanley) Thayer-Nel of San Rafael, Calif., Jeff Thayer of San Diego, Calif., and Laurie Thayer of Lafayette, Colo.; grandchildren, Teri Webb of Valejo, Calif., and Shawn Sanders of Anchorage, Alaska; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob Webb and Rebecca Sanders of California, and six great-great-grandchildren, all of California.
Dee was preceded in death by her parents and both husbands, Dick and Charles.
