Deloris M. "Sally" Murphy, 90, of Strawberry Point, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Sally was born Jan. 8, 1927, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Leroy E. and Lena (Martin) Higgins. She was a 1945 graduate of Independence High School and was married to Bernard J. "Bud" Murphy on May 30, 1947, in Tecumseh, Mich. The couple made their home in Independence. Sally was employed as a certified nursing assistant and as a records clerk at Peoples Memorial Hospital in Independence for 40 years before her retirement in 2000.
Sally enjoyed spending time with her large family, her siblings and friends. She was kind, caring and generous in helping others.
She is lovingly remembered for her thoughtfulness and cards for birthdays and special occasions.
She was an excellent cook, and her favorite pastimes were watching the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes, having puff-corn and working on puzzle books. All who knew Sally were blessed and shared her love of life.
She is survived by five children, Ray (Nancy) Murphy of Winthrop, Shelia (Tom) Holcomb of Sacramento, Calif., Cheryl (Bill) Winter of Strawberry Point, Patty Webster of Cedar Rapids and Kelly (Randy Jones) Murphy of Cedar Rapids; a daughter-in-law, Billie Jean Murphy Kovalcheck of Carmichaels, Pa.; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Deleva Platt and Nancy J. Hoffman, both of Independence; and several precious granddogs.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bud, in 2004; a son, Mike Murphy; and four brothers, John, Richard, Arnold and James Higgins.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with the Rev. Dean Schlitter officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Winthrop. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home.
