Delores Thompson, 94, died peacefully at University Hospital, Iowa City IA, on July 28, 2024, surrounded by her family.
Delores grew up riding horses, protecting her brothers with hat pins and working on the farm with her family. Farmer, gardener, hunter, storyteller, stained glass artist, tarantula fancier, shepherd, home brewer, avid reader – whatever interested her, she pursued it with industry and joy.
Delores was born on December 3, 1929 in Britton, South Dakota. She attended school in a one-room schoolhouse, and after graduating went on to Wheaton College, in Illinois. She met Stan Thompson at Wheaton and they were married in 1953. She held various jobs before raising five children. She ran the small family farm, which included a milking cow, a few horses, sheep, goats and chickens.
She was a beloved mother, wife, and grandmother, and her family relished her fierce, independent, resilient spirit, and delight in the world. That was an enduring part of who she was, and what we will remember most.
She is preceded in death by her husband H. Stanley Thompson, and survived by a brother, Walton, her five children, Geoffrey (Shauna), Peter (Julie), Kenneth, Philip (Tira) and Susan, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
