Delores Thoma, 92, Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids. A visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the chapel. A private inurnment will follow the service. First Lutheran Church will officiate.
Survivors include daughter, Sue Thoma Garvin; grandson, Jonathan Garvin; and sister, Rose Ann (Fred) Swartz,
Delores was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley; parents, Leona and Urban Sadler; sisters, Niara Harris and Eileen Huebner; and son-in-law, Paul Garvin.
Delores was born Nov. 4, 1926, in New Albin, Iowa, the daughter of Leona and Urban Sadler. She graduated from Postville High School and received her nursing degree in 1947 from Finley Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque. She married Wesley Thoma in 1948 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Delores had a 38-year career as director of medical services and critical care at St. Luke's Methodist Hospital, Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1988. As a lifelong caregiver, Delores always put others first. Even after retirement, she never stopped caring for and supporting those around her. She was an accomplished seamstress and became an avid Spartans fan when her grandson Jon attended college at Michigan State University. Above all else, Delores loved spending time with her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Foundation or Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
