DELORES "DOTTY" SCHWERTFEGER
Deep River
Delores "Dotty" Schwertfeger, 88, of Deep River, passed away Monday evening, Nov. 28, 2016, at Brooklyn Community Estates. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at United Church of Deep River. Burial will be held in the Goldenrod Cemetery in Deep River. Visitation will begin after noon Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma with the family present from
5 to 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United Church of Deep River. Friends may sign the online guestbook at www.hollandcoblefuneralhomes.com. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.
Delores "Dotty" Schwertfeger was born Jan. 5, 1928, in Benton County, the daughter of Chris and Lillian Voss Rieck. Dotty was raised on the family farm and graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1946. She married Lewis Schwertfeger at Luzerne, Iowa, on Dec. 14, 1947. To this union five children were born. Dotty and Lewis farmed northeast of Deep River and raised their family. She helped with all of the farm duties, was a devoted wife and mother, was a wonderful cook and loved to sew. She also enjoyed playing cards, cribbage and Pepper.
Faith was very important to Dotty, reading the Bible every day and doing her daily devotions. She was a member of the United Church of Deep River, the United Church Women of Deep River and the Deep River Busy Bee Club. Her children and grandchildren were all a huge part of her life. Dotty was kind to everyone and had a big heart.
Delores is survived by her family, Ronald (Gelene) Schwertfeger of Cedar Rapids, Beth Schwertfeger of Winterset, Lewis III Schwertfeger of California and Donna Schwertfeger of Deep River; eight grandchildren, Ronald (Melissa) Schwertfeger, John (Rebecca) Schwertfeger, Amy (Ron) Childerston, Jeremy (Sara) Schwertfeger, Wendy (Adam) Nelson, Joshua (Jennifer) Gorsch, Dusty (Daniel) Cook and Christopher (Allison) Samuelson; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Delores was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lewis; her sons, Jerry and Steven Schwertfeger; her siblings, Corrine Rieck, Merlin (Ruth) Rieck, Harland (Dorothy) Rieck and Ramona (Roger) Koehn; and her grandson, Steven Schwertfeger.
