Delbert W. Olberding, 88, of Dyersville, passed away Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, at Ennoble Manor in Dubuque.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave. SW, Dyersville, where an American Legion/VFW/40 & 8 service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral services.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate.
Delb was born Oct. 29, 1928, in Dyersville, the son of Francis and Cecelia (Meis) Olberding. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, primarily stationed in Alaska. He married Marjorie Ernster on May 12, 1956, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, and spent 30 years at John Deere Dubuque Works, retiring in 1987.
Delb was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 137, VFW Post 7736, 40 & 8 Post 632 and the Dyersville Sportsmen Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, traveling, attending a variety of sporting events and tending to his garden.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marge; six children, Daniel F. Olberding, Joan Klaren, Gary (Dawn) Olberding, Ann (Mike) Link and Dave Olberding, all of Dyersville, and Becky (Rick) Serovy of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Nick and Bill Klaren, Robby and Molly Olberding and Brandon and Bryce Serovy; a brother, Don (Darlene) Olberding of Dyersville; and in-laws, Eileen Olberding, Gen Olberding of Dyersville, JoAnne Lehman of Epworth, Judy Gempler of Edina, Minn., and Jerry (Janel) Ernster of Birch Bay, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Dan Klaren; siblings, Mercedes (Gilbert) Singsank, Germaine (Joe) Schlichte, Catherine (Jim) Griffin, Gerald (Erma) Olberding, Ray Olberding and Bob Olberding; and in-laws, Mary (Tony) Balsamo, Charles Bergfeld and William Lehman.
Memorials are preferred to St. Francis Xavier Basilica, its grade school or Beckman Catholic High School.
