Doris was born Oct. 2, 1925, in rural Henry County, the daughter of James E. and Ruth Houdesheldt Beatty. She graduated from Washington High School in Washington, Iowa, with the class of 1943. She attended the University of Iowa and Browns Commercial College in Iowa City and went on to work as a private secretary at the Iowa ordinance plant in Burlington. She also held various other secretarial positions in southern Iowa, Des Moines and Iowa City. Doris married Edwin T. Delaney on Feb. 7, 1946, at St. James Church in Washington, Iowa. Edwin passed away in 1999.
Doris was a homemaker and an excellent seamstress using her talent to fabricate custom draperies professionally while her children were young, then returning to the workforce as a secretary and bookkeeper until her retirement in 1990. She had many interests but her love was for fiber arts which resulted in becoming proficient in dressmaking, needle working, knitting, quilting, spinning wool and weaving fabrics on her loom. She also loved reading and was very content reading for hours, even embracing the electronics age of computers and iPads that gave her the ability to always have a book at hand.
Her family includes her children, Bill (Pam) Delaney, Kathleen (Steve) Fullerton, Jo Marie (Rick) Hite, all of Cedar Rapids, Jim (Terry) Delaney of Coralville and Tom Delaney of Des Moines; and sister, Dorthea McDole of Washington, Iowa; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Doris's family and her services.
