Bemidji, Minn.
Dean William Schnell, 85, of Bemidji, Minn., formerly of Dysart, Iowa, died Friday, May 4, 2018, at Abbott Northwestern Medical Center in Minneapolis following a heart attack.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2018, at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Dean was born April 5, 1933, to William and Verna Schnell in Dysart, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State University and joined the Army, where he served during the Korean War. He worked for New York Life while in Iowa City, later settling in Bemidji, where he was general manager and owner of the North Central Door Co. before retiring. He was married to his wife, Patricia, in 1989. He was active with the VFW, Eagles, American Legion and Shriners. He liked to travel, golf, bowl, garden, perform magic tricks, make wood and glass sculptures and work on crossword puzzles.
Dean is survived by his wife, Patricia; five children, Mark (Joleen) of Bemidji, David (Alexi) of Orlando, Fla., Brenda (Theron) and Dana (Yolanda) of Phoenix and Jay of Minneapolis; two stepchildren, Todd (Barb) of Minneapolis and Shawn of Bemidji; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Allen of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Verna; and sister, Ardith Bull of Dysart.
