Dean Leo Moroney, 86, of Manchester, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
He was born July 26, 1928, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Leo and Effie (Barclay) Moroney. He was raised in the area and attended rural country school near Masonville and was a 1945 Lamont High School graduate.
On May 3, 1947, Dean was united in marriage to Doreen Creighton at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Galena, Ill. Together they farmed for 35 years in rural Winthrop and retired to Lake Delhi.
Dean loved watching his grandchildren's sports and playing cards with his Masonville friends. He was extremely proud of his Irish heritage, cherished his grandchildren, and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Doreen Moroney of Manchester; their two children, Craig (Sharon) Moroney of Winthrop and Cindy (Jim) Lyness of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Katie (Mike) Perry, Maggie (Fred) Peck, James (Bridget) Moroney, Shannon (Brad) Lake, Liz (Andrew) Best and Jenny (John) Fordyce; and seven great-grandchildren plus one on the way.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Vivian (Leonard) Ryan; and a special niece, Judy Cole.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 6, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Masonville, with the Rev. John Kremer officiating. Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 5, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home, Manchester, where there will be a 3 p.m. Scripture service. Friends also may call from 9 until 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment: St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Masonville.
