Dean Kirkpatrick, 86, of Mechanicsville, died Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Dean's funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday, May 26, at the First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville. His visitation will be Monday from 2 until 4 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Lisbon Cemetery, with military honors.
Surviving Dean in death are his children: daughter, Gwen and her husband, the Rev. Carl Wenck, Mur-freesboro, Tenn., and their children, Megan (Laramie) Navrath and Jana (John) Greer and their children, Rebekah, Faith, Elizabeth, Elijah and Sarah; daughter Dee Ann and her husband, Mark Glover of Mechanics-ville, and their children, Mike (Kristen) Glover and their children, Addyson and Mallory; Patrick (Jenny) Glover and their children, Carter and Keira; and Tyler Glover. Dean also is survived by a sister, Maxine Sievers; a sister-in-law, Opal Gish; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Dean in death were his parents; beloved wife, Dorothy "Dody;" brother, Arlo; and sisters, Ruth Gamble, Opal Luerkens and Verna Schultz.
Dean was born Feb. 12, 1928, in Mount Vernon, the son of Ray and Coral Stockton Kirkpatrick. He married Dorothy Dee Gish on June 5, 1949, in Lisbon. Dean graduated from Lisbon High School. He later served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. Dean was a hired farm hand for several area farmers. He was a maintenance worker at the Masonic Nursing Home in Bettendorf and worked part time at Toys R US until his retirement. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville.
Dean volunteered making pies for the church, helping with the food pantry and calling bingo at the care center.
Dean and his wife loved to walk. He had an infectious laugh. Dean loved to talk and knew no strangers!
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Dean's honor may be donated to First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville or the Mechanicsville Volunteer Ambulance.
