Dean Paul Humphrey was born May 27, 1919, in rural Deep River on the family farm, the son of Stephen and Lela (Ochs) Humphrey. He graduated from Millersburg High School in 1936. On Feb. 16, 1941, Dean was united in marriage to Ruby Luella Davis in Sigourney. In 1943, Dean enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in World War II on the flag crew in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Millersburg Legion, Dayton Township trustees, Iowa County school board and Millersburg United Methodist Church. He served on the church board, was a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and was a lay leader. Dean was a 4-H leader and active in soil conservation. He enjoyed traveling, camping, listening to music, going to Branson, reading and following the Iowa Hawkeyes in football and basketball. Dean passed away Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, in Williamsburg at the age of 98 years.
Dean is survived by two daughters, Deanna (Ken) Boeke of Mooresville, Ind., and SuzAnne "Suzy" Boyle of Cedar Rapids; 15 grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great grandchildren; and a special niece, Nancy Swain of Millersburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Marvin and infant Kenneth Raymond; granddaughter, Stephanie; a special nephew, David Byram; stepmom, Belva Montross Humphrey; son-in-law, Edward Boyle; and nephew-in-law, Lloyd Swain.
A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Millersburg United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Millersburg United Methodist Church, Highland Ridge or Alzheimer's research. Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg is caring for Dean and his family. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
