Dawn Nylin, 92, died peacefully at her home in the Meth-Wick Community. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, 2424 42nd St. NE, with Pastor Scott Meador officiating. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Dawn was born in
Chicago, Ill., to Marion and Mildred (Hixson) Hite. Her husband of 65 years, Paul, passed away in 2017.
Dawn grew up in Chicago. She graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1951 and married Paul Nylin in 1952. They were active charter members of three new United Methodist Churches in the Chicago suburban area. Later in their retirement years, they enjoyed traveling by train throughout the U.S. and attending numerous Elderhostels.
Dawn worked as a social worker for Cook County Dept. of Welfare in Chicago, was a stay-at-home mother, then returned to school and worked as a preschool and early childhood special ed teacher. She taught at Lovely Lane Outreach Preschool when it originated in 1974 and at Grant Wood AEA Early Childhood Program as a Parent Child Educator with special needs preschoolers.
Dawn was a longtime member of the League of Women Voters, the U.N. Association and Lovely Lane United Methodist Church.
She especially liked reading, doing handiwork and activities for and with children, such as teaching Sunday School, leading Scouts and 4-H groups and promotion of UNICEF.
Dawn's happiest times were spent with family.
She is survived by her son, Steve (Linda); daughters, Cindy Skopec (Mike) and Sue Lovik (Gary); grandchildren, Andrea Hutchison, Aaron Skopec, Amanda Zawada, Kim Fuqua, Kara Housewright, Jerad and James Nylin; great-grandchildren, Isaac, Joshua, and Isabelle Hutchison and Maia Housewright; and 13 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sisters, Janice and Carol; her son-in-law, Gary Lovik; and Friskie, beloved family dog.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lovely Lane/Trinity Lane Preschools or to UNICEF.
