David L. Yoder, 89, of Kalona, died Monday, March 28, 2016, at Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
David was born March 23, 1927, in Kalona, to Jonas R. and Magdelena (Miller) Yoder. He attended Evergreen Country School. During World War II, he served in civilian public service in Dennison and Gulfport, Miss. On June 3, 1948, he married the love of his life, Verna Beachy, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage. David served as pastor at Sunnyside Mennonite Church from 1959 to 1996. He also served as chaplain at the Pleasantview Home from 1986 to 2011.
Survivors include his wife, Verna of Kalona; seven children, Joy Yoder- Washington of Baltimore, Md., Grace (Nelson) Weber of Reading, Pa., Faith (Dale) Hostetler of Johns Island, S.C., James (Trish) Yoder of Goshen, Ind., Lowell (Mary) Yoder of Kalona, Lilly (Danny) Northrup of Iowa City and Mary Jewel (Carl) Abbott of Centerville. He was a wonderful grandfather to Tara, David, Andrew, Chris, James, Danny, Lynelle, David, Michael, Joel, Elizabeth and Jonathan; and a great-grandfather to Hudson, Emerson, Hannah, Riley, Lucy, Esther and Sophia. He also is survived by three brothers, Paul E. Yoder, Ed Yoder and Frank (Ada) Yoder.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, John and Lynn; son-in-law Jeff Washington; a half brother, Chris; and two half sisters, Frieda and Mabel.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Sunnyside Mennonite Church, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
