David Allen Whiting, 85, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Central City, Iowa, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2024, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 6, 2024, at Grace Baptist Church located at 1461 East Post Road, Marion, Iowa, with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Mount Clark Cemetery in Central City. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Central City is assisting the family.
David was born on June 12, 1938, in Central City, the son of Willis and Lena (Van Fossen) Whiting. He was a 1957 graduate of Central City High School. On July 19, 1964, David was united in marriage to Mary Jeanne Garrett in Central City. He worked for Linn Co-op delivering propane for 33 years, until his retirement. David enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeyes, lawn care, his grand dogs, and spending time with family. When his brother Paul left for the war, he gave David a silver dollar; he carried it everywhere he went; wearing it down thin over the many years. David will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
David is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 60 years, Mary Whiting of Marion; children, Denise (Joel) Smith, Dyan Whiting, Darran (Ronda) Whiting, and Deb Whiting; grandchildren, Becca (John) Workman, Andy (Katie) Whiting, Hannah (Drew) Mathias, Austin (Stacy) Whiting, Caleb Smith, and Ashton Whiting; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Becky Whiting; two great-grandchildren; and siblings, Karl Whiting, Betty Rawson, Lloyd Whiting, and Paul Whiting.
Memorials in David’s memory may be directed to the family.
