David E. Matthews, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, at Living Center East, Cedar Rapids. Memorial services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Pastor Lloyd Brockmeyer. Family will greet friends from noon until service time. Inurnment will be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, Earlville.
David is survived by his wife, Eunice of Cedar Rapids; sons, Mark Matthews of Dallas, John Matthews of Cedar Rapids and Paul (Jeanne) Matthews of Marion; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
David was born March 24, 1926, in Summerset, N.Y., son of Almaran and Nora (Perkins) Matthews. He graduated from high school in New York, then served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. David then received his master's degree at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On June 10, 1951, he was united in marriage to Eunice L. Splinter in Earlville.
He taught at Waukon, Cedar Falls and Oelwein before moving to Cedar Rapids, where he taught industrial arts and drivers ed at Jefferson High School. He retired in 1988, after 35 years of teaching.
David enjoyed painting and the couple enjoyed dancing and belonged to the Harmonis 50s Dance Club.
