David Lee Evans, 56, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, at his home after a courageous 19-year battle as a quadriplegic. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church by Pastor Steve Qualben. Burial: 2:30 p.m. Monday at Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport. Friends may visit with the family from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Teahen Funeral Home, and after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
David is survived by his son, Andrew (Lindsey) Evans of Iowa City; daughter, Aubrey (Adam) Nicholson of Ann Arbor, Mich.; grandchildren, Freya and Alice Evans, both of Iowa City, and Hayden and Mila Nicholson, both of Ann Arbor, Mich.; mother, Irene Evans of Indianola; Sherri Petersen-Evans of Anamosa; brothers, Joseph (Patty) Evans of Omaha and Stephen (Michelle) Evans of Bettendorf; and sister, Heidi (David) Evans Klode of Indianola.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1994.
David was born on Easter morning, April 2, 1961, in Davenport, the son of Vaughn and Irene Schmarje Evans. He attended grade school at Trinity Lutheran in Davenport, then graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1979. He married Sherri Linn Petersen on May 28, 1983, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport. In 1983, he received both a B.A. in acccounting and CPA from the University of Iowa. David was a certified public accountant for McGladrey and Pullen from 1983 to 2005, becoming a partner in 1994. He was a charter member of the Cedar Rapids Daybreak Rotary, a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, and had been active with Boy Scout Troop 560 and Junior Achievement. David was a longtime member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where he was the treasurer for six years. David was recognized for organizing bond financing for the church capital campaign.
In 1998, David was involved in a bicycle accident in Minnesota while on a Boy Scout trip; this resulted in his becoming a ventilator-dependent quadriplegic. In 2003, he was the fifth recipient in the world to receive a diaphragm pacer system, which eliminated the use of a full-time ventilator.
David was known for his great humor and strong Christian faith, and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and caregivers
