David Heitkamp, 63, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Mooreton, N.D., passed away on Monday, July 3, 2017, at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha due complications of Parkinson's disease.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Mooreton, N.D., with the Rev. Peter Anderl as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 7, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, N.D., and one hour before the service on Saturday in Mooreton.
David Heitkamp, son of Sylvester and Martha (Zalewski) Heitkamp, was born Sept. 8, 1953, in Breckenridge, Minn. He attended school at Mooreton Elementary, Wahpeton High School, NDSSS and NDSU. He completed his education at the University of Iowa with a master's degree in engineering. David had been employed at FMC Link-Belt and P&H Crane, both in Cedar Rapids, Koehring Crane, Milwaukee, Wis., and Rockwell Collins, Cedar Rapids, until the present time.
David enjoyed his many years working on the family farm, along with hunting, target shooting and driving his red Mustang. He also earned a black belt in karate. He enjoyed hearing what his nieces and nephews were doing in their lives. He will forever be known for his love of reading which resulted in his own personal library.
David was a "friend" to many, some of which are Tony Nordick, John Walkup, Kevin Kutzer, Steve and Angie Sawyers, George/Deanna Hanson, David Hanson, Gary Duggleby, Jill Butler, Mark and Judy Osborn, Irv Girtz, Jan Aasgaard, Jim Kleeman, Rod Osterholt and Frank Kintzle.
David is survived by his siblings, Brian (Brenda) Heitkamp, Bismarck, N.D., Joyce Haugen, Wahpeton, N.D., and Dean Heitkamp, Marion; nieces and nephews, Kyle (Lindsay Guzzo) Heitkamp, Edmonds, Wash., Megan (Steve Szczodroski) Heitkamp, Coon Rapids, Minn., Alan Haugen, Cookeville, Tenn., and Kelly Heitkamp, Bismarck, N.D.; and his great-niece and great-nephew, Juniper and Hartley Szczodroski.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Martha Heitkamp; and grandparents, John and Angeline Zalewski, and John and Angela Heitkamp.
