David G. Williams
David G. Williams
Bloomington, MN
David G. Williams, 89, of Bloomington, MN, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2024. Born in Davenport, IA, Dave was a graduate of Davenport High School and the University of Colorado Boulder where he earned a degree in Geology. As a college student, Dave worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, driving a dynamite truck through the mountains.
After graduation, Dave married his childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Marion Bailey. The newlyweds settled in Petersburg, VA, where Dave served in the Army. Two years later, Dave began a 37-year career in industrial metals with a position in Kenosha, WI. Working in various sales and management roles for Anaconda Brass and Vincent Metals, Dave earned the respect of both co-workers and customers. Dave’s work took the family to Chicago, IL; Minneapolis, MN; Cedar Rapids, IA; and back to Minneapolis. With each move, Dave and Marion cultivated new friendships, many of which they maintained throughout their lives.
As a father, he modeled a strong work ethic and good character. Dave often told his kids how proud he was of them. When they slept in as teenagers, he loved to tell them they were missing the best part of the day.
Once retired, Dave made the most of his days by planning trips, creating scrapbooks for each family member, cheering for the Hawkeyes, and monitoring the stock market (every day!). Spending winters in their Florida home, Dave created many memories with his children and grandchildren at the beach, on the golf course, and at the local ice cream shop.
Dave appreciated a scotch old fashioned and a meal that someone cooked for him (he was happy to be on cleanup duty). He enjoyed a game of cribbage and a round of golf—especially the mid-round ginger snaps. Not one to brag, Dave was proud to have notched a hole-in-one on his home course in Minnesota.
His family will miss his big smile, kind words, and the stories he loved to tell, even the ones they’ve heard many times.
Dave is survived by his wife Marion; son Jeff; daughter Cathy (Tom) Mataloni; and grandchildren Kyle and Alec Mataloni. He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Ruth Williams; daughter-in-law Joan Williams; and granddaughter Amanda Williams.
A private service will be held later this spring. Donations in Dave’s memory may be made to The Children’s Cancer Research Fund, 1650 W. 82nd Street, Suite 400, Minneapolis, MN 55431, https://childrenscancer.org, or to a charity of your choice.
