DAVID CECIL DESOTEL
Cedar Rapids
On Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, the cold Iowa wind fiercely whirled the latest snow as David "Dave" C. DeSotel, 70, of Cedar Rapids, fought the final battle against his body at Willow Gardens Health Center in Marion. He lost the battle but was rewarded with a well-deserved eternal rest. His final days were spent with his children and sister at his side.
Dave is survived by his four children, Danielle DeSotel-Slagle (Toby) of Fairfax, Jason DeSotel and Eric DeSotel of Marion and Courtney Webb of Acworth, Ga.; brother, Dean DeSotel; sister, Debbie Goddard of Harrison, Ark.; one niece, one nephew, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry DeSotel; mother, Gertrude White; and sister, Diane DeSotel-Smith.
Dave devoted his life to raising his son, Eric, who was born with Down syndrome. He fought ferociously to give him a "normal" life while raising him to be a smart, independent adult. Where there wasn't a way, he found a way. The word "can't" was not in his vocabulary and he didn't allow it in his children's.
He retired from Square D after more than 35 years of service. He took great pride in his work and was recognized as a vital team member and leader. While serving as union steward, he fought for the little guy and was not afraid to stand up to any opposition necessary to achieve his goals, personal or professional.
The family requests memorial contributions be sent to Camp Courageous of Monticello, Iowa, in lieu of flowers.
