David Bright
Iowa City
David Bright died Monday, April 8, 2024.
David attended St. Mary’s, Regina and graduated from West High School and The University of Iowa.
David (Dave to his many many friends, cousins, and colleagues) worked at the Mercy Hospital kitchen during high school and beyond, negotiating (along with his cousin, Jim) new weekend hours in order to avoid split shifts. David let Diana Bowers know he and Jim could do the work of 4 people, and they did.
David started at UPS in college, first working the 4 a.m. pre-load and later driving for Big Brown. He was conscientious, putting his customers first—he enjoyed the city routes, with regular customers, and for the decades he was driving, UPS grew larger with each year he was there. He loved UPS and had a great work ethic. Most importantly, he had the respect of his co-workers.
After he retired from UPS, Dave was a dear friend and dedicated member of the Kirkwood Community College’s Iowa City Campus, and is profoundly missed. Dave’s tenure at Kirkwood was defined by his unwavering commitment to Kirkwood’s mission and his positive impact on students and colleagues alike. He consistently exemplified compassion and mentorship to the students. His beloved Kirkwood colleagues have said that they will deeply miss him, and are comforted knowing that his legacy of kindness and camaraderie will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He lived authentically, and for that, we cherish him.
We are very grateful for the love and support of Curt and Sue.
Doug, Dorian and Dee, along with their families, and his many friends mourn this loss. He will be missed so much by so many.
The family will greet friends at The Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Avenue from 10:30 a.m. to Noon, Friday, April 12, 2024. A rosary will be said at 11 a.m. followed by a brief service led by Father Ed Fitzpatrick.
