David Henry Brenneman was born Feb. 20, 1923, in Kalona, Iowa, the son of Henry and Minnie (Knepp) Brenneman. Following graduation from Center High School, rural Kalona, he enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. In 2011, he enjoyed his time with his daughter and other veterans on the Honor Flight to our nation's capital. Then the following year he was inducted onto the Veterans Trail at Coralville Lake.
He was united in marriage to Betty A. Smith on Sept. 29, 1945, in Iowa City. For many years the couple made their home in Iowa City, where David worked for Capen Auto Supply for nearly 10 years and then enjoyed a 30-year career with Procter and Gamble, retiring in 1986. In 2002, David and Betty moved to Kalona. She died later that year on Oct. 17.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Iowa City and the Old Capitol Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed square dancing with Betty for many years, he loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, mushrooming, and of course golfing! David had been an active bowler for years, belonging to many teams in the leagues of this area, and he liked playing cards with family and friends.
His family includes his two daughters and their husbands, Amy and Bill Butterbaugh of Williamsburg and Susan and Steve Utter of Tucson, Ariz.; grandson, Colton Butterbaugh and his wife, Melody, of Oxford; and David's siblings, Ada Fisher, Irene Brenneman and Lois Gugel, all of Kalona, Wally Brenneman (Minnie) of Joetown, Virginia Ryan of Pinckney, Mich., and Jim Brenneman (Eunice) of Denver, Colo.
David was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; sister, Blanche Brenneman; and his brother, Dan Brenneman.
