Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at Teahen Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Emily Haight. Friends may visit with the family before the service from 1 to 3 p.m. Burial: Palo Cemetery, Palo. Reception and meal following at 5:30 p.m. at Cedar Hills Community Church.
Jan is survived by her four children, Denise (Bob) Hoke of Solon, Deb (Dave) Stanger of Phoenix, Ariz., Rick (Lesli) of Sherman, Texas and Jodi (Jeff) Heeren of Jewell; grandchildren, Sean (Jackie) Hoke, Cassandra Hoke, Emily Stanger, Darci (Michael) Bray, Derek, Rachel, Matisse and Kaiden Dauenbaugh, Tiffany (Josh) Hilfiker, Amanda (Chris) Miller, Jenna and Jacob Heeren; great-grandchildren, Emma, Hanna, Robbie, Daniel, Brooklyn, Liam, Amree and Mallori; two sisters, Monita Ebersole of Maquoketa and Lois (Russ) Rasmus of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her parents; and her brother, Curtis Hayes.
Jan was born June 12, 1929, the daughter of Rutherford “Burm” and Minnie “Shugie” Rabe Hayes. She graduated from UNI with a B.A. degree in liberal arts.
She married the love of her life, Richard Allen Dauenbaugh, on Aug. 18, 1951, in San Diego, Calif. She taught high school business and worked in early education before becoming a mother.
Jan loved being with her family, especially the grandchildren and the littlest great-grandchildren. Time with the family was spent playing cards and talking in depth about life. She was an avid reader and loved to discuss books with friends and family.
Jan was authentically expressive, able to relate to others in a real way. We value her understanding and insight into life. Her sweet smile left a lasting impression.
We are all delighting in Dick and Jan's reunion and the knowing that they are Home. She is now living in the Mystery that she had often pondered.
“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” 1 Corinthians 13:12.
Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of Mercy and Cedar Hills Community Reformed Church.
