Daryl L. Wherry, 82, of Onslow, passed away Friday, Sept. 25, 2015, at Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa. His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at First Presbyterian Church in Onslow. A visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lahey Funeral Home in Wyoming. Burial will be at Clay Cemetery, rural Onslow, with military honors.
Daryl Lee Wherry was born April 17, 1933, to Wilferd and Violet (Blaylock) Wherry in Monticello, Iowa. He graduated from Onslow High School in 1952. On Feb. 22, 1953, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Topping at the United Methodist Church in Wyoming.
He hauled milk for Monticello Creamery in his earlier years and then drove the petroleum truck for FS in Onslow for over 30 years.
He was a member of Onslow First Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. Daryl honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Wyoming Post 259 and he conducted many Memorial Day services.
Daryl was very involved in his community. He was on the Pioneer and Clay cemetery boards, a volunteer on the Onslow Fire Department, president of Jones County Historical Museum Society and member of Jones County Conservation board and Onslow Community Men's Club.
Daryl was a people person and loved to strike a conversation with anyone with whom he came in contact. He was a very proud American and always made sure everything he purchased was American made. He enjoyed watching NASCAR.
Most of all, he loved his family and spending time with them.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Geraldine of Onslow; five children, Steve (Valerie) Wherry of Wyoming, Kevin (Sandi) Wherry of North Liberty, Brad (Lisa) Wherry of Wyoming, Duane (Sharon) Wherry of Muscatine and Suzanne (Matt) Schnedler of Franklin, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Dick Wherry of Oxford Junction and Doug Wherry of Erie, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bert and Florence; his parents, Wilferd and Violet; and a sister-in-law, Mary Wherry.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his honor.
