DARYL P. GRECIAN
Cedar Rapids
Daryl P. Grecian, 67, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at his residence of pancreatic cancer. Visitation will be held at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, March 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. The family also will greet friends on Sunday, March 19, beginning at 3 p.m. at Solon United Methodist Church, Solon, before the service at 4:30 p.m. There will be a celebration of life gathering following in the fellowship hall.
Daryl Paul Grecian was born April 18, 1949, the son of Paul and Lorraine Grecian. He grew up in Lone Tree, Iowa, where he graduated from high school. Daryl attended barber college in Cedar Rapids. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years. He married his high school sweetheart, Judy Bell, on Sept. 20, 1969. They lived and raised their family in Solon and recently moved to Cedar Rapids.
Daryl was a barber and hairstylist in Cedar Rapids for 49 years. In more recent years, he helped many hair loss clients with hairpieces and custom wigs. He was outstanding in his field. He was a platform artist for many years, traveling around the United States, and taught many continuing education classes for barbers and cosmetologists in Iowa.
Some of his greatest accomplishments were holding all offices of the Iowa Barbers Association, vice-president of UFCW for Iowa and many local union offices and member of the state of Iowa competition hairstyling team. He performed many officiating duties at national hairstyling competitions, and made instructional hair-cutting videos that were used in barber colleges throughout the United States. His most honored award was receiving the Hairstylist of the Year award in 1981 by the International Guest Artists and Hairstylists Association, which was voted on by its members. In later years, the National Hair Journal selected his salon as Salon of the Year.
Daryl enjoyed his clients and felt each of them were his personal friends. He always was ready with a joke to share and a smile on his face. He loved watching NASCAR, traveling, cruising, boating on Lake Macbride and spending time with family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Judy Bell Grecian, of Cedar Rapids; two children, Angie Grecian Daoud of Mason City and Andy Grecian of Solon; three grandchildren, Kristina, Khalil and Joey Daoud; sister, Colene Grecian (Paul Anderson); niece, Erika Hilleman; and father-in-law, Lester Bell.
His parents preceded him in death.
Memorials may be directed to the Solon United Methodist Church, The Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids, and Hospice of Mercy in Cedar Rapids.
