Cedar Rapids
Darren J. McCabe of Cedar Rapids, IA passed away on May 20, 2025, while under the compassionate care of Oldorf Hospice House, after a brief battle with cancer.
Darren was born June 1968, the son of Anne M. McCabe, in Rock Island, IL. Shortly after his birth, Anne and Darren moved to Des Moines, IA along with her parents, Joseph and Josephine McCabe, her sister Jane and brother John. Darren started to hone his skateboarding skills and was on the diving team his senior year at Hoover, graduating in 1986. During Darren’s high school years, he spent summers visiting his aunt and cousin, Donna and Chelli Thomas in Balboa, CA, loving his summers on the beach.
Darren moved to Cedar Rapids in 1990 to work at Linn Skate Park in Marion, and shortly after started his journey with laying hard wood floors. He was very talented, well known in the area, and a successful hardwood installer for many years, eventually owning his own business. He had a great love of animals, and a kindness toward people, and will be missed by all who knew him, especially Jane Peterson and the rest of the Peterson Family, including dogs, Fred and Ted who kept Darren company.
During his adult years, Darren made numerous trips to California visiting Donna, Chelli and niece and nephew, Megan and Colin. He enjoyed the beach and teaching Colin the art of skateboarding. One of his highlights was meeting Tony Hawk.
Darren is survived by his aunts: Donna Thomas of Costa Mesa, CA, Jane McCabe (Mark Kreger) of Denver, CO; uncle: Tom McCabe of Ignacio, CO: cousins: Chelli (Don) Prouty of Mission Viejo, CA, Kelsie McCabe of Des Moines, IA, and three nieces, one nephew and one great-nephew.
Family and friends would like to thank Mercy Hospice, the Oldorf Hospice House, and a special thanks to RHD Iowa for providing Darren with much-needed comfort and support.
