DARRELL “SHORTY” D. STURTZ

Darrell "Shorty" D. Sturtz of Marion passed away at St. Luke's Hospital on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021, he was 88 years old. Darrell was born in Garrison, Iowa, on July 23, 1933, to the parents of Floyd and Alvina (Grau) Sturtz. He married Joan Brooks in 1958, where they built their lives together on a farm in Alburnett, Iowa. He worked
at Rockwell Collins for 30 years before retiring.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 20, at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with Pastor Jon Moss officiating. Interment to follow at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery-Garden of the Last Supper.
Darrell's passions included spending time with his family and friends, doing jigsaw puzzles and creating his next intarsia woodwork project. Between his love for old western movies, college basketball, the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes, the house was never quiet. When he wasn't at home, Joan and him enjoyed making memories at various casinos, especially the penny slots.
Darrell is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan; daughter, Sherri Sturtz of Marion, Iowa; son, Mike Sturtz (Stephanie Brady) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Lisa Sturtz of North Liberty, Iowa; three grandchildren, Brianna, Shane, Dalton and Delaney; a stepgrandchild, Chad Smith of Mazomaine, Wis., (and wife Iilene Smith); two step-great-grandchildren, Leo and Arlo Smith; a sister, Jan Brown of Ely, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Darrell was proceeded in death by his parents; son, David Sturtz; two brothers, Melvin and Malin Sturtz; and four sisters, Nadine Staggs, Eileen Koehn, Irene Lundahl and Darlene Krug.
Memorial contributions may be made directly to the family.
The family would like to send a sincere thank-you to the entire staff at St. Luke's Hospital for all the love and support they showed Darrell while he was in their care.
