Darrell Richard Axtell of Cedar Rapids went to be with his Lord on January 7, 2026. Visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, 4200 First Avenue NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402, on January 15 at 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 am Funeral Service. Interment will be at Cedar Memorial Cemetery.
He was born on December 30, 1933, son of Ralph and Irene Axtell on a farm near Loveland, Iowa. Darrell was baptized on April 10, 1949, at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 in Germany and France. Darrell graduated from Iowa State University in 1958 with a degree in Animal Science.
On May 3, 1958, Darrell married Carol Green, his one and only true love, until her death on February 2, 2018, after nearly 60 years of marriage.
Darrell was an avid golfer and strong follower of the ISU Cyclones.
Survivors include daughters Laura Axtell of Dover, Delaware, and Susan Schmidt and her husband John, of Houston, Texas, and three grandsons, Mark, John, and Michael; and sister Joanne Bowers and her husband Don of Council Bluffs.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Carol.
In lieu of flowers, any memorials and gifts may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, 1363 First Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 52405.
