Darrel M. Dankert passed on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. The service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6, at First Lutheran Church, 1000 Third Ave. SE. The family will be available at 10 a.m.
He was born in Omaha, Neb., on May 7, 1936. He attended Benson High School and then went to Iowa State University and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1960. He then moved to Cedar Rapids to begin his career at Collins Radio. He retired from Rockwell International after 34 years of service in 1994.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra, whom he married in 1964; two sons, John and Mike (Heather); a brother, Bill (Mary Ann); sister, Carol; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Darrel had many hobbies and interests including music, especially Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. He also liked gardening, cooking and taking naps. He and Sandra enjoyed traveling to South Padre Island for 12 years, throughout the southwestern U.S., Canada and Lake Vermilion, Minn. Recently, he and Sandra enjoyed life at the Meth-Wick Community, in particular Men's Coffee, where he was known as the mayor.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Mercy Medical Center and the Oldorf Hospice House for their loving care and support of Darrel and his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church, the Meth-Wick Community or the Oldorf Hospice House.
