Darold "Dare" Owen Smith, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, with burial to follow in Baker Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted. Visitation will be from 2 to
5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9.
Darold was born Oct. 28, 1926, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Thomas and Jessie (Borghart) Smith. He graduated from Wilson High School and joined the United States Navy in 1944. He was a Cook 3rd Class, referring to himself as "Chef," spending most of his time in the Philippines, until his discharge on July 3, 1946. Darold was united in marriage to Glenda Kroeger on Oct. 26, 1970, in Las Vegas, Nev. Dare worked most of his years as a salesman of wholesale building products. His passion was golf and he enjoyed gambling at Riverside.
Darold is survived by his wife,
Glenda; son, Craig Smith; daughter, Sharon
(Richard) Mullin; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Jean Mulvany; and sister-in-law, Doris Smith, all of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law, Rex Kroeger of Kearney, Neb.; nieces and nephews; as well as his special poodle, Snuggles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, David T. Smith; and sister-in-law, Coleen Kroeger.
Memorials may be directed to either Camp
Courageous or the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter in his name.
