Darlene Gatto, 95, passed away January 23 at Legacy Assisted Living, Surprise, AZ where she had resided for the past two years. Buriel will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery Rest Haven, Plot 181A. No graveside service to be held. A memorial service will take place at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids at a later date.
Survivors include her son, Steve Gatto and wife, Tatiana of Texas; and son, Thomas Gatto and wife, Jane of Maine.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edmund Meyer (died 1965) and Clara (Kamp) Meyer (died 1983); sister, Evelyn Sinnott (died 2004).
Darlene was born August 28, 1929 in Postville, IA. Her first job was as a teacher, then she worked for Link Belt in Cedar Rapids for many years from which she retired. Then being the strong, independent lady that she was, she started a new adventure by moving to Phoenix, AZ. She bought her own condo in Sun City which she lived in until 94 years of age. She has been a lifetime member of First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids and a devoted member of the Lutheran Church of Sun City, AZ.
Darlene had many diverse interests including world travel; musical theater; attending many, many games of the Phoenix Suns (avid fan of Charles Barkley); Arizona Cardinals football; rode her bike around Sun City until her late 80’s; made many birdwatching trips and was an avid reader of books. She loved the company of her orange striped kitty, Punkin, who was with her for many years. Our family will miss her lasagna and molasses cookies.
