Darla J. Brodigan, 58, of La Crescent, Minn., formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away at her home on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Dec. 9, 1958, in Guttenberg, Iowa, to Alfred and Darlene (Schroeder) Bahls and graduated from Guttenberg Community School. She graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids and then from the University of Iowa with a bachelor of science in nursing. In 1992, she graduated from the Mayo Clinic Nurse Anesthetist Program. She worked as a nurse anesthetist in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Green Bay, before moving to La Crescent in 1998. In early 1999, she began her career as a nurse anesthetist at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse.
On July 20, 1996, she married Dan Brodigan in Independence, Iowa. Darla enjoyed traveling as well as planning her trips. She loved to spend time with her family at the cabin on Essman Island near Guttenberg. She was extremely devoted to her husband and children and also to the patients she cared for.
In addition to her husband, Dan, she is survived by two children, Kate Brodigan and Patrick Brodigan, both of La Crescent; a sister, Rhonda (Duane) Jasper of Independence; a brother, Steve (Sue) Bahls of Guttenberg; two brothers-in-law, Perry (Luann) Brodigan and Jim Brodigan, both of Independence; nieces and nephews, including Aaron (Mary) Bahls, Slade (Christina) Bahls, Katherine (Lloyd Rogers) Jasper, Elizabeth, Jessica and Brian Jasper; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. She is further survived by her dog, Daisy.
Darla was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 111 S. Oak St., La Crescent, with Pastor Mike Woods officiating. Burial will follow in Prince of Peace Cemetery, rural La Crescent. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and again on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
