After defeating the odds of kicking cancers rear for 2.5 years (thanks Agent Orange), not taking a bullet to the chest in Vietnam, being able to swim when you fall out of boat, and surviving Camp Lejeune tainted water, I decided it was time for me to party with the big guy and all my family and friends.
Danny “Dan” Sellers, 78, longtime Iowa City Police Officer, died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023, at home surrounded by his family.
To celebrate Dan’s life a service of remembrance will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday. Following the service, family and friends will gather at The Kirkwood Room.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Dan Sellers Memorial Fund.
Dan was born Aug. 2, 1945, in Sigourney, Iowa, the son of Cleland and Elma (Swink) Sellers. He was a 1963 graduate of Sigourney High School, where he played basketball and was on the track team. After graduation, Dan enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served from 1964 to 1968. His tour of duty included Vietnam, Hawaii and Camp LeJune. He achieved the rank of Sergeant.
Following his military service, he moved to Iowa City and became a deputy sheriff and in 1970 joined the Iowa City Police Department. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant and retired in 2010.
On June 26, 1976, Dan married Diana Burger. He enjoyed softball, fishing, hunting and was a member of Twin Rivers Bass Club in the Quad Cities. Most important to Dan was the love he had for his family.
Dan is survived by his wife, Diana and children, Bradley (Ruth) Giesking of Bend, Ore., Debra (Ken) Giesking-Budach of New Hampton, Todd (Julie) Giesking of Cedar Rapids and Kristy (Rob) Rippentrop of Ankeny; five grandchildren, Erika (Josh), Derek (Kialy), Grant (Sloan), Samantha and Hayden; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Carol Fuller and Jeanne Marie Flack.
