Daniel James Hempel, 71, passed away on Jan. 9, 2023. Dan was born on July 13, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Lorenz and Myrtle Hempel. He attended Coe College in his hometown, then transferred to San Diego State University. He received his Bachelor's degree in business administration from SDSU, and went on to work as the City Treasurer for Pomona, Los Angeles and Ventura, Calif.
As a young boy, Dan watched the Rose Parade with his family, and dreamed of watching it in person. Years later, he became a proud member of the Tournament of Roses, and volunteered with the organization for over 20 years. He delighted in the joy the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game brought to those around him. Dan also enjoyed his time in California taking trips to the beach and attending county fairs, all while listening to the Beach Boys and Righteous Brothers.
He is survived by his siblings, Steve Hempel and Barbara Moore; and his daughters, Marianne and Katherine.
