Daniel J. Chelf, 50, died Wednesday, March 16, 2016, in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, March 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, with the Very Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Visitation will be Monday from
4 to 8 p.m. at St. Patrick's Parish Hall. Burial with military rites will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the Daniel Chelf Memorial Fund has been established.
Dan was born June 8, 1965, in Iowa City, the son of Ltc. (Ret.) Kenneth and Carolyn (Wombacher) Chelf. He was a graduate of Westover High School in Fayetteville, N.C., in 1983.
Dan served for four years as an airborne infantryman in the 82nd Airborne Division, America's Guard of Honor. He rose to the rank of sergeant. His awards and decorations include the Parachutist Badge, the coveted Army Ranger Tab and the Expert Infantry Badge.
After serving, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa. On Aug. 9, 1991, Dan married Jan Streb at St. Patrick's Church.
Most important to Dan was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend to many.
Dan was a concrete estimator for 28 years at Streb Construction Co., an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and had completed four Ironman triathlons.
Survivors include his loving wife, Jan; and their three daughters, Danielle, Megan and Kaitlyn, all of Iowa City; his parents, Ltc. (Ret.) Kenneth and Carolyn
(Wombacher) Chelf; his siblings, Chris (Mark) Faircloth of Fayetteville, N.C., Phil (Laura Beth) Chelf of Southlake, Texas, Jeff (Frances) Chelf of Raleigh, N.C., and Kelly (Dr. Tobey) MacDonald of Decatur, Ga.; mother-in-law, Mary Joan Streb of Iowa City; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Alene (Chad) Singleton, Dave (Mindi) Streb, Karen (Darrell) Cordy, Kathy (Pat) Streb, Mike (Lori) Streb, Steve (Joey) Streb and Shelly (Terry) Alberts; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceeded in death by his father-in-law, Al Streb.
