Dale G. Sylvester, 82, of rural Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Jan. 4, 2018, at Colonial Manor, Amana, Iowa.
Dale was born Oct. 27, 1935, in rural Guttenberg, to Dale and Hazel Putzier Sylvester. He married Rose McDowell. They later divorced. Dale served in the United States Air Force as an MP from 1955 to 1958. He was employed full time at Rockwell Collins for 38 1/2 years. While working at Collins, Dale also had many part-time jobs, including pumping gas at a Conoco Station in Marion, custodial work for Midwest Janitorial Services in Cedar Rapids, and owning his pride and joy, Sylvester Radio and TV Repair Shop in Marion, retiring in 1990.
He then returned home to Littleport, where he was employed at the Clayton County Assessor's office for 10 years. His greatest joys were his family, his farm, his cattle and his beloved dog, Abby.
Dale is survived by his children, Jon "Jack" (Deb) of Elkader, Judy "Kay" of Cedar Rapids, Jeff "Flaffer"
(Sheri Refle) of Elkport, Jo Ann "Jofatser" of Kaiser, Mo., and Jill "Jipper" (Dave) Wallace of Homestead, Iowa; grandchildren, Shane, Ryan and Tyler Sylvester, Sarah Rodgers, Grace Klimek, Chris Riley and Hunter Sylvester, Melanie Heitman, and Kayley and Tim Wallace; 16 great-grandchildren; siblings, Larry (Connie) Sylvester of Elkader, Roger (Fofy) Sylvester of Ohio, Mary Yeager of Colorado, Owen (Susie) Sylvester of Elkport; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy McGinty; one great-grandson; and his beloved dog, Abby.
The family wishes to thank the nurses, CNAs and staff at Colonial Manor, Amana, for their exceptional care of their father. Also a special thank you to Molly and Scott and the staff of Essence of Life Hospice for their outstanding care, and Wayne Riley for his special friendship.
Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at Hope Lutheran Church, 32513 Dinan Rd., Elkader, Iowa, and one hour before services on Saturday at the church located in Littleport.
Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport.
