DALE R. HAMMER
Iowa City
Dale R. Hammer, 92, lifetime resident of the Iowa City area, died Thursday, April 9, 2020, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Dale was born Feb. 18, 1928, in rural Johnson County, the son of Ray and Ada (Klaus) Hammer. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. On Oct. 1, 1955, he married the love of his life, Mick Schnoebelen, in Hills, Iowa. Dale always has worked in the area, most recently for many years in the transportation services department of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, retiring nearly 30 years ago.
He was one of those people who never met a stranger, and would be the first to help anyone in need. He enjoyed traveling, camping and boating, and was extremely happy when his Cubs finally won the World Series, but most important in Dale's life were his family. He and Mick would be there for all the kids', grandkids' and great-grandkids' events, no matter what. A proud man he was when surrounded by his family!
His family includes his wife, Mick; their children, Terry Hammer, Trudy Conklin (Jerry) and Ricky Hammer (Katie); grandchildren, Erin Manley (Taylor), Clint Conklin (Sarah), Haley Peters (Nick), Alex Benshoff (Ashley), Cody Hammer and McKinley Hammer; great-grandchildren, Holden Manley, Callen Conklin, Mayzie Conklin and Adeline Benshoff; sister-in-law, Carolyn Hammer; and numerous, nieces, nephews and friends.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents; an infant grandson, Corbin Dale Hammer; brother, Jerry Hammer; and sisters, Jean Hammer and Thelma Leeney and Thelma's husband, Donald Leeney.
Services celebrating Dale's life will be held at a later date to be announced. To share a thought, memory or condolence, please visit the funeral home website www.gayandciha.com. Memorial donations can be made in his memory to AMVETS Post 107, 402 AmVets Rd., Richmond, IA 52247.
