Dahn, Gaylon R.
Gaylon R. Dahn, 81, of Aurora, Colo., formerly of Cedar Rapids and Lisbon, died of pancreatic cancer Feb. 21, 2010, at a hospice in Aurora. Services will be today in Centennial, Colo., with the Rev. John Kingsbury officiating. His body will be cremated.
Survivors include his wife, Donna; children, Teri Dahn, Aurora, Colo., Jeff Dahn, Cedar Rapids, David Dahn, South Elgin, Ill.; sister, Catherine Larsen; and grandchildren, Ashton Conner and Gavin Conner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Nelavene Dahn; and brothers, Miles and Merle Dahn.
Gay was born May 24, 1928, in Lisbon, Iowa. He gradutated from Lisbon High School in 1946 and joined the Navy. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids and married Donna Meade on Aug. 30, 1952. Gay graduated from Coe College in 1954 and then began his coaching and teaching careers.
He started at Keota, moved on to Mount Pleasant, and continued coaching and teaching at Cedar Rapids Jefferson in 1959. While head basketball coach at Jefferson, he won a state championship in 1967 and was state runner-up in 1964.
He retired from coaching and went into administration at Kirkwood Community College, Dodge City (Kan.) Community College, and Denver, Colo. He retired to Aurora, Colo., with his wife in 2004.
Gay was a member of the Jefferson Athletic Hall of Fame, Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame and Iowa High School Athletic Association Basketball Hall of Fame.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.
He will be missed by his wife, children and grandchildren.
