Curtis J. Selzer, 96, a lifelong resident of Fairfax, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019, at his home. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, St. John XXIII Catholic Church by the Rev. Dustin Vu. Burial: Fairfax Cemetery in the family plot.
A rosary will be recited at
3 p.m. Thursday by the Knights of Columbus with a vigil to follow at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, where friends may visit with the family from 3 to 7 p.m. and after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
Curtis was born May 7, 1922, in Fairfax, the second son of Jacob F. and Elizabeth Zamastil Selzer. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fairfax until it was closed by the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Then he became a member of St. John XXIII Catholic Church. He attended and graduated from St. Patrick's School in Fairfax and served in the navy during World War II. He was a member of the third degree Knights of Columbus since 1941, a member of the fourth degree Knights of Columbus since 1955, and a member of Pekomy Post 572 of the American Legion since 1946, where he served as finance officer, adjutant and commander.
He spent his life in the construction industry, building farm buildings, light commercial buildings and fine homes, including many houses designed by nationally known architects. He maintained the St. Patrick's buildings during the 30-plus years he served as a parish director. Curtis worked well past retirement age and stayed busy with gardening, community and family.
Curtis is survived by his sister, Mildred Harover of Cedar Rapids; three sisters-in-law, Mary Catherine Selzer of Fairfax, Margaret Selzer of Cedar Rapids and Dorothy Selzer of Waukesha, Wis.; and three generations of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, William, Wallace, Lloyd and Kenneth Selzer; a brother-in-law, John Harover; and a sister-in-law, Vickie Selzer.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Mary Catherine for her years of devotion and the kind, loving care she gave Curtis, to Deacon Stan Scheiding for his prayerful visits, and to the Mercy Hospice team for their care over the past few months.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hospice of Mercy, the Fairfax Legion or a charity of choice.
