Curran, Ruann
Ruann Curran, 67, of Dubuque, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, peacefully at home with her family after a 12 month battle with cancer. Services will be at11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at Behr's Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., Dubuque. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Ruann was born May 23, 1943, in West Bend, Iowa, daughter of Ruben and Anna (Keller) Metzger. Her parents created her unusual name by combining their own first names. Shortly thereafter the family moved and began farming near Elgin, Iowa, where she later graduated from Valley High School.
She married Edmond Curran on May 22, 1965, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Elkader, Iowa. They settled in Dubuque, where they worked and raised their family. Ruann worked for many years at Hennagir's Hallmark in the Town Clock Plaza and was a familiar face to many who worked downtown. Before joining Hennagir's, she worked at Hartig's Drugstore on Central Avenue.
Ruann loved photography and took tens of thousands of photos over the years. She enjoyed meeting and talking with people, visiting with relatives and neighbors, shopping, collecting keepsakes and feeding the birds and squirrels who visited her house.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Ed; three children, Ann Curran (Jeff Buboltz) of Platteville, Wis., Steve Curran of Albuquerque, N.M., and Bruce Curran of Earlville; three grandchildren, Joshua Pape of Dubuque, and Amelia Curoltz and August Curoltz of Platteville, Wis.; five brothers and sisters, Larry Metzger of Lakeport, Fla., Marcia (Bill) Butikofer of Elkader, Steven (Donna) Metzger of Garber, Marene (Terry) Palmer of Amana, and Kathy (George) Oldridge, of Papillion, Neb.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
In lieu of flowers, a Ruann Curran Memorial Fund has been established.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque for its help over the last several weeks, especially Ann, Jayne, Sherry, Kristina, Sylvia and Elizabeth.
