Cunningham, William Stuart
William Stuart Cunningham, 64, died Friday, July 20, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, at the United Methodist Church in Anamosa. Pastor Laurie Riley will officiate at the service. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Anamosa.
Surviving are his wife, Cloanne; his parents, James and Novella Cunningham of Marion; two sons, Brian S. (Micah) of Anamosa and Matthew A. (Julie) of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Ella, Brayden and Regan; three brothers, Terry (Deb Twachtmann) of Cedar Rapids, Jerry (June) of Marion and James (Becky) of Matthews, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
William Stuart Cunningham was born Nov. 11, 1947, in Monticello, Iowa, the son of James and Novella (Winch) Cunningham. He was a 1966 graduate of Encinal High School in Alameda, Calif. Bill entered the United States Marine Corps on July 1, 1966, and served a tour in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged on June 30, 1970, with the rank of sergeant. After his service, Bill began his career as a United States Postal Clerk in 1971 until he retired in 2008. On March 11, 1973 Bill and Cloanne Koppenhaver were united in marriage at the United Methodist Church in Anamosa.
He was a member of AMVETS Post 110, Honor Guard, American Legion Post 13, which he was a past commander and adjutant and current treasurer, and the VFW, which he was currently the junior vice commander. Bill was responsible for placing more than 800 flags in the Jones County area cemeteries. He was past president of the Anamosa school board, former scout master for Troop 67, volunteer and current board member of the Anamosa Prison Museum, and has been a member of the United Methodist Church for more than 40 years. He was a fan of the Oakland Raiders, Oakland A's, Iowa Hawkeyes and NASCAR, an avid stamp collector and loved to play golf.
Bill was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be missed dearly by those closest to him.
