Cuhel, Blanche A.
Blanche A. Cuhel, 96, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully May 21, 2013 at Cottage Grove Place. As per Blanche's request there were no services. A private family graveside was held in Czech National Cemetery.
Blanche was born April 10, 1917, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Edward C. and Blanche (Kulisek) Hobel. Blanche graduated from Grant Wilson High School in 1935 and attended the 60th Class Reunion in 1995. She worked as bookkeeper for Bezanson and Whitehead Insurance. She married William L. Cuhel Aug. 25, 1940, at The Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. Together they took fine care of the Czech immigrant parents, William and Emma Cuhel in their later years. She loved cats.
Blanche never drove a car and she made beautiful colored pencil drawings of flowers and hearts. William died May 8, 1994. Blanche then lived alone with her cat, Boots in a one-story condo in southeast Cedar Rapids for over 10 years before she moved to Cottage Grove Place.
Blanche is survived by her nephew, Dr. Russell L. Cuhel, a marine biologist living in Milwaukee, Wis.; and her sister-in-law, Emilka Z. “Bibs” Cuhel-Stoops-DeVries, 95,
retired accountant living in Santa Rosa, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids.
