Crystal was born March 11, 1978, in Waukegan, Ill., to James Sr. and Joy Adams. She later moved to the Iowa City area around the age of 16, where she started her own family. She received her GED from Kirkwood Community College. She moved to Cedar Rapids several years later. In 2020 she moved to Sioux City to restart her life.

She enjoyed cooking and often cooked for the whole neighborhood. She loved to watch murder mysteries and, most recently, the series "Power." Crafting had become a new interest for Crystal, and she made several things for family and friends.
