Crow, Harold 'Dean'
Harold “Dean” Crow, 89, of Oxford, died peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Mercy Iowa City following an illness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Cosgrove, with the Rev. Edmond Dunn officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Windham Cemetery, rural Windham. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 3to 8 p.m. and also from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Oxford First Responders or Oxford American Legion Post 537.
Dean was born May 5, 1923, in Oxford, Iowa, the son of Frank and Norma (Oldacre) Crow. He was a graduate of Cosgrove High and later went on to serve in the United States Army. Following an honorable discharge from the military in 1946, Dean attended Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. On Feb. 23, 1949, Dean married Helen Clements in Iowa City.
Dean was a lifelong farmer and also worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Federal Crop Insurance claims specialist for over 20 years, retiring in 1989. Dean was also very proud of his military background and was a 67-year member of the Oxford American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Helen of Oxford; five sons, Steven (Brenda) Crow of Marengo, Dennis Crow of Oxford, Dale (Kaye) Crow of Jacksonville, Fla., James Crow of Middleburg, Fla., and Lynn (Lisa) Crow of Oxford; four daughters, Mary Jane Schott (Dennis O'Byrne) of Middleburg, Fla., Nancy (Larry) Skripsky of Oxford, Kathleen (Curt) Barkalow of Oxford and Kim (James) Carney of Parnell; two sisters, Helen Day of Garden Grove, Iowa and Jeanne Yoder of Camanche, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Marie Crow and Ada Crow of Oxford; 21 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Stanley Crow; two brothers, Donald Crow and Leslie Crow; a sister, Margaret Kasper; and brothers-in-law, Robert Kasper, William Day and Ted Yoder.
