Crippen, Leaneta Mae (Portwine)
Leaneta Mae (Portwine) Crippen, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Randy Cole. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her former husband, Harry (Phyllis) Crippen; children, Carol (Ed) Knight, Mary (Fred) Scheffler, Barb (Roger) Miller, Pat (James) Evans, Ron (Deb) Crippen, Don (Joan) Crippen, Roger Crippen, Debra (Gary) Bute, Glory Kaegbein (Crippen), Sheila Goad (Crippen) and Shawn (Leif) Crippen-Kvidahl; 30 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; many extended family members; longtime friend, Esther Brown; and family friend, Barbara Maitland.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Lloyd; sister, Buehla; grandson, Richie Scheffler; great- granddaughter, Georgia Hennessey; son-in-law, Vernon Goad; and companion, John Moore.
Born March 5, 1931, in Elk Port, Iowa, Leaneta was the daughter of Joseph and Luella (Hook) Portwine. On May 3, 1950, she married Harry Crippen in Independence, Iowa. She later moved to Cedar Rapids.
Leaneta was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother who treasured spending time with her family and friends and preparing the many holiday meals. She touched the lives of many throughout her life and was known as “Mom” by many. Her smile and gentle, loving ways will be missed by all as well as her famous mayonnaise cake.
