Craig, John Wayne
John Wayne Craig, 67, of Hiawatha, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011 from complications during surgery at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Services: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Burial: St. John Cemetery. A vigil service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids, where friends may visit from 2 to 5 p.m. Friends may also visit after 9 a.m. Monday at the church. Military honors presented by the American Legion Honor Guard.
John is survived by his wife, Linda; two daughters, Mary (Chris) Steger of Cedar Rapids and Michelle (Brad) Owens of Central City; two sons, Jim Craig of Media, Pa., and Don (Tia) Craig of Marion; four granddaughters, Jessica, Rylee, Blair and Evah; grandson, Derrick; five sisters, Jane (Dick) Cunningham of Johnston, Arlene (Jim) Owens of Olathe, Kan., Pat (Dale) Bailey of Marengo, Betty (Bob) Hruska of Anamosa and Rose (Craig) Bergman of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Tim (Mavis) Craig of Blue Springs, Mo., and Chuck (Pat) Craig of Lodi, Wis.; aunt, Arlene Smeltser of Tennessee; uncle, Earl Nichols of Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents.
John was born April 19, 1944, in Iowa City, the son of Robert and Gladys (Nichols) Craig. He graduated from St. Patrick Catholic School and then joined the Navy and served during the Vietnam War. After his time in the military, John was employed with the Carpenters Union. John married Linda Carter on Aug. 16, 1975, in Rock Island, Ill. Their marriage was later blessed in 1980 at St. Pius X Catholic Church. John, with Linda working by his side, was the owner and operator of Craig's Furniture Clinic for 25 years, retiring in 2008.
John loved his grandchildren, fishing, playing Texas Hold ‘Em and Chess. He enjoyed gardening and spending time outdoors.
John was a loving and generous man who was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
