Costas, Michael John
Michael John Costas, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013. Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Peter Andronache. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a Trisagion service will be held at 6 p.m. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marjorie; his children, John M. (Rachelle) Costas of Scottsdale, Ariz., Timothy A. (Robin) Costas of Lothian, Md., Elizebeth A. (Thomas) Eicher of Annapolis, Md., and Michael A. (Becky) Costas of New Market, Md. nine grandchildren, Michael, Daniel and Adrienne Costas, Ace, Alex and Chloe Fattouche and Andrew, Alan and Tyler Costas; sister, Helen Mantice of Northbrook, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Athena Costas; and a sister, Demetra Costas.
He was born Sept. 3, 1926, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to John and Athena Angelides Costas. He served with the Quartermaster Corps with the United States Army during World War II. In 1950, he graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in commerce. Following graduation, Mike joined his father with the Harmony Cafeteria until it closed due to urban renewal in 1960. He was an agent with Paul Revere Life Insurance Co. for 44 years, later known as Unum Provident Life Insurance.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, a member of Crescent Lodge No. 24 for over 50 years, a member of the Consistory and El Kahir Shrine, and the Tuesday Noon Optimist Club. Mike was an avid Hawkeye sports fan.
