Costa, Jean
Jean Costa, 82, of Iowa City, died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at Windmill Manor Care Center. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Oct. 26 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father John Spiegel officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, the City High School Band or New Horizons Band.
Jean was born May 27, 1930, in Iowa City, the daughter of Raymond and Helen Lawrence Slavata. She was a graduate of the University of Iowa, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta and the Scottish Highlanders. Jean married Michael “Mick” Costa on Oct. 22, 1955, at St. Mary's Church.
Jean was a secretary at City High School for many years and later was employed with the University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders and AJ August Clothing Store.
Jean was a member of St. Mary's Church, New Horizons Band and a past member of the Legion of Mary. Jean enjoyed being involved with the Rock and Read Program at Helen Lemme Elementary School. To Jean her family was the light of her life.
Survivors include her daughter, Susie (Tom) Thrams of Iowa City and their son, Jamie (Kate) of East Lansing, Mich.; her son, Jim (Patty) Fransen of Shawnee, Kan., and their son, Dustin of Tempe, Ariz.
Special thanks to Linda, Evelyn, Jeanette, Jean's Court Street Place neighbors and numerous friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sister, Edith Fransen.
