Conrad, Roger S.
Roger S. Conrad, 94, of Marion, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died March 17, 2011, at Winslow House Care Center, Marion. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Thomas E.S. Miller will officiate. Private inurnment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; son, Thomas (Susan) of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; daughter, Karen (Carl) Thompson of Ames; three granddaughters, two grandsons, three great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin and Selma Conrad; daughter, Nancy Hugo; and sisters, Florence Fahlbusch, Frieda Chambers and Gertrude Saar.
Roger was born in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from the old Washington High School in 1934 and was employed by Collins Radio that year. A year later he entered Iowa State College and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering, rejoining Collins as an engineer. He married Phyllis Wenger in 1941.
In the early days with Collins, Roger was a charter member of the Collins Employee Credit Union which he helped organize, serving as its first secretary. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He participated in organization of the local chapter of American Production and Inventory Society. He served as a Marion representative in the Metropolitan YMCA board of directors and worked with the Boy Scouts. He was a member of Crescent Masonic Lodge, El Kahir Shrine and the Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon, elder and trustee.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 310 Fifth St. SE, Cedar Rapids; St. Luke's Hospice, 290 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids; or a charity of the donor's choice.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Winslow House and St. Luke's Hospice, also Dr. Thomas Schroeder and Dr. Michael Mullerleile.
