Collins, Quentin Joseph
Quentin Joseph Collins, 90, of Toddville, passed away at his home Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, from a short illness, surrounded by his family. Funeral services: 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Hiawatha, by the Rev. Neil Manternach. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. A vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. today at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, where friends and family may visit from 5 to 8 p.m., and on Friday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Quentin is survived by his five children, Kevin of North Liberty, Kerri of Toddville, Craig of Palo, Kelli of Toddville and Kenton (Patty) of Center Point; five grandchildren, Jeromy, Christopher (Carrie) McCain, Ryan McCain, Sabrina Collins-Atkinson and Ian Collins; four nieces: Kathy Snitker of Big Lake, Alaska, Sandy Van Horn and Lindy Howes (James) of Waukon, and Gerry (Vieden) Zahariev of Rochester, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arleenl his son, Jerry Raymond; his sister, Margaret Ann Van Horn; and his grandson, Brandon Michael.
Quentin was born March 9, 1920, in Waukon, the son of Joseph and Kathleen (O'Neill) Collins. He graduated from Waukon High School on May 24, 1937. Quentin was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran serving from 1941 to 1947, and completed aircrew training at Texas A & M. Quentin received the following military decorations and citations: American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory and one Service Stripe.
He was united in marriage to Arleen Caroline (Beer) on Jan. 27, 1949, in Elkader, Iowa. (Arleen passed away in November 1992.) Quentin worked as a fireman with Wilsons from 1950 to 1960, until his layoff. He then went to work at Penick & Ford from 1961 to 1977, until his layoff. He worked at Midland Forge from 1977 to 1982, when he retired. Quentin was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.
Quentin enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching the Cubs and Notre Dame, and spending time with his grandchildren. He spent many weekends at the field trials running his dogs. He had a wonderful sense of humor and keen memory.
Quentin's family would like to thank his friends, Ted and Phylis (Campbell, Calif.) and Eldon. They would also like to thank Hospice of Mercy for their caring support.
