Collins, Norbert R.
Norbert R. Collins, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, May 28, 2012, in hospice at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. John Louk. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include a son, Charles (Phyllis) Collins of Swisher; a daughter, Dawn (Larry) Hayslett of Dubuque; a brother, Roy Collins of Danville, Va.; a sister, Mary Jarvis of Peterstown, W.V.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene E. Collins; his parents; and five brothers and sisters.
Norbert was born June 7, 1921, in Roanoke, Va., the son of Clyde and Alice Collins. Norbert served in the Army Air Corps, completing 50 missions over Europe during World War II. He married Darlene E. Mathews on April 22, 1945, in Cedar Rapids. After his service, Norbert was employed by Link-Belt Speeder (FMC) for over 20 years, and then as a signal technician for the City. He retired in 1982. He was an active member of AFSME and UAW and a longtime member of Salem United Methodist Church. He enjoyed reading, fishing, woodworking and spending time with family.
